Meet the Doctors

Barry W. Herring, D.M.D.

Dr. Barry W. Herring brings a wealth of knowledge and over 33 years of dental experience to the Starkville community. Born and raised in Starkville, he graduated from Starkville High School in 1973. He graduated with "highest distinction" from Mississippi State University in 1977 with a General Science degree and then graduated from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 1980. Dr. Herring is a general dentist who provides a wide array of dental services, including crowns, bridges, root canals, orthodontics, implants, gum surgery, oral surgery and dental implants.

Dr. Herring is a member of many professional organizations, including the Academy of General Dentistry, American Orthodontic Society, American Dental Association and the Mississippi Dental Association. He continues to educate himself in the latest technological advances in his field through over 2600 hours of continuing education since completing dental school in 1980. Dr. Herring and his staff have a combined 171 years of experience in dentistry!

Dr. Herring has been married to Karen for 34 years and has two daughters. Their daughter, Kathryn, graduated from Mississippi State and is working in Tupelo, Mississippi. Their daughter, Elizabeth, has graduated dental hygiene school from the University of Mississippi and is working with us. She is married to Jon Woolfolk, DMD, a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry.   Jon joined our practice in July 2011, making this a true “family practice."

Away from the office, Dr. Herring enjoys teaching Sunday School at First Baptist Church, participating in the church choir and quartet, exercising, traveling, bicycling and water skiing. Dr. Herring has been on several mission trips to Honduras, helping people with little or no access to dental care.

Is Dr. Herring turning his practice over to Dr. Woolfolk? No! Dr. Herring loves dentistry and the joys and challenges he experiences every day! He is not planning on decreasing his patient load any time soon. Our wish is for Dr. Woolfolk's practice to grow up alongside Dr. Herring's.

We are totally flexible in which doctor you choose to do your treatment. Each of us gains much joy from seeing patients choose the other doctor.

At dental check-up appointments, we may be asking which doctor you'd like to see or asking if you'd like to meet Dr. Woolfolk. We are not trying to move patients to either doctor. You, the patient, are our boss. We want to serve you, giving you the best dentistry possible, and allow you to choose which of us you might prefer for any part of your treatment!

We will often "look over each other's shoulder" to observe and admire, and sometimes collaborate, our ideas on your treatment.

Thank you so much for choosing us to help you with your dental needs!

Jonathan A. Woolfolk, D.M.D.

Dr. Jonathan A. Woolfolk graduated from Senatobia High School in 2001. He enjoyed playing JUCO soccer for Northwest Community College and Itawamba Community College before transferring to Mississippi State University in 2003. Dr. Woolfolk has a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from MSU and completed one year of graduate studies in chemistry prior to being accepted to dental school in 2007. Dr. Woolfolk completed his Doctorate in Dental Medicine from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in May 2011.

Dr. Woolfolk has been married to Elizabeth Herring Woolfolk for nearly eight years. They are very excited to return to the hometown of their alma mater to begin a new career and to pursue new friendships together. They have 2 beautiful children, John Parker, 21 months old, and Natalie, 2 months old.
Away from the office, Dr. Woolfolk enjoys exercising, reading, watersports and traveling. They are active members of First Baptist Church, Starkville.

Dr. Woolfolk’s training in the field of chemistry proves to be very useful as he practices dentistry. Dental materials are very complex and ever-changing. Dental materials include ceramics, polymers and hybrid materials. Physical properties that are of concern to dentists are solubility, fracture toughness and color stability. Manufacturers of dental materials will market the ‘latest and greatest’ materials to all dentists, and they frequently include data from peer reviewed research studies to motivate the clinician to use their new product. It is not wise to trust the manufactures’ claims blindly. Dr. Woolfolk’s background in chemistry enables him to evaluate the research in order to know if the new product is best for his patients.

Dr. Woolfolk is one who embraces new dental materials and emerging dental-related technologies. He is proud to be a part of a modern general dental practice which is engaged in implant dentistry, orthodontics, and hard and soft tissue grafting. He enjoys using the practice’s new CAD/CAM machine, which allows the dentist to design and mill a crown out of a solid block of porcelain for same-day or next-day delivery. Dr. Woolfolk enjoys meeting new patients, building rapport with these patients, and helping them to address their immediate and long-term dental concerns.
